A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
